Periodontal Disease, also known as gum disease, in an infection caused by bacteria in the mouth, which forms a sticky film on teeth called plaque. If not cleaned regularly (Brushing and Flossing!) this plaque can harden into calculus, which in some cases can cause redness and inflammation of the gums. If left unchecked, over time this inflammation may progressively cause loss of support of the teeth, and this condition is called periodontal disease.
