Technology and dentistry

Dentistry is a profession that has historically benefitted greatly from technological advances. As dentists, we have the privilege to access cutting edge technologies from material sciences providing us with materials that exhibit ever improving strength, beauty and bio-compatibility, to fantastic tools that aid us in providing better, faster and less invasive treatment options.

Our most recent addition at Helderberg Dental Practice is in the field of CAD/CAM technology, where we invested in the CEREC Omnicam chairside digital acquisition unit. This new tech allows us to take digital 3D impressions with a small camera instead of the traditional silicone or rubber materials, which is significantly more comfortable, faster and more accurate. Furthermore, it allows us to use integrated CAD software to design the restoration, and then seamlessly manufacture the restoration very quickly and accurately. This in turn allows us to place the restoration within hours, not days or weeks.

Although there are a plethora of materials available, our material of choice is a very strong, material known as lithium-disilicate. Commercially known as e.max, it has become the benchmark for crowns, veneers and even small bridges, and can also be utilized to manufacture custom restorations on dental implants.

As our profession constantly evolves, it is important to remember that our patients come first. I believe this technology is another step in the right direction.
